How Reverse Mentoring Works

The main aim of reverse mentoring is to empower leaders and senior managers to remain in touch both with their organizations and the outside world. By doing so, more junior personnel individuals have the opportunity to be heard by seniors and more experienced personnel. Also, for many organizations, the purpose of reverse mentoring is to provide the opportunity to leaders for acquiring a fresh perspective on rising trends in areas of technology or the future of work.

Recently, the use of reverse mentoring has been used to engage specific personnel age groups like the Millennials, in the processes followed in an organization. By following reverse mentoring, the younger employees develop skills found in senior leaders and in turn senior leaders gain fresh perspectives from the next generation of talent. Reverse mentoring, was proved to be a very effective approach for developing leadership in organizations. Also, by utilizing reverse mentoring, senior leaders get more chances to actually listen to the younger employees and understand their strengths and weaknesses. Thus, the Millennial employees’ skills, opinions, and experiences are validated, which enables a relationship of mutual trust and understanding.

To sum up, we mention below the most important aspects reverse mentoring can help an organization achieve:

  • Increase the visibility of minority employees to leadership
  • Combat ageism in the workplace
  • Encourage the use of new trends and technologies
  • Preparing high potential talent for future leadership positions
